Stem cell therapy has started revolutionising medical science owing to its distinctive features. Stem cell therapy shows an extensive range of applications in dental therapy too and one of the interesting applications is the regeneration of bone around the teeth that have got affected by periodontitis. Periodontitis is the inflammation of the tissue that primarily affects the supporting bone and gums around the teeth and results in the loosening of teeth. In periodontal therapy, the restoration of the vital pulp tissue is performed with the help of stem cells. Since teeth contain highly proliferative stem cell populations, they can be easily obtained from teeth that are surgically removed or naturally lost and could be employed in tooth repair and restoration also. In general, to extract stem cells from a tooth three important factors must be considered, such as a tooth with healthy pulp and caries-free; deciduous tooth; and third molars between 16 and 20 years. Stem cells of dental origin have multiple applications in dentistry. Besides, dental stem cells could provide non-dental applications too, such as developing stem cell-based therapies for major life-threatening diseases.
